Golfing - Four beautifully maintained championship golf courses set the Galena Territory apart as the premier golf destination in Northern Illinois. No other golf resort in the region so perfectly incorporates the surrounding natural landscape of rolling hills and woodlands into such a challenging and rewarding test of golf. In addition to 63 exquisitely manicured holes laid out over four courses, there is a grill and golf shop featuring an attractive selection of golf and casual wear. To book a tee time, call 800-892-2269.
Lake Galena and Marina (Accessible only by property owners and their guest) - One of The Galena Territory’s most cherished amenities is Lake Galena, a scenic 225-acre lake perfect for anglers and boaters who enjoy observing nature on leisurely cruises. It boasts some of the best fishing in the area, with an abundance of smallmouth and largemouth bass, walleye, bluegill, channel catfish, perch and tiger muskie. The lake is primarily spring-fed and has a spillway at one end creating a beautiful 40-foot waterfall called Thunder Bay Falls. Be sure to watch for its many feathered friends…eagles, owls, ospreys, blue herons, ducks and wild turkeys. Wildlife, in addition to the abundant fish and turtles, often includes white tail deer, red fox, beavers and muskrats. Rent a boat or purchase fishing supplies at the Bait & Tackle Shop, or dock your own boat at one of the Marina’s numerous slips. The Marina Park Complex also has a picnic pavilion, tennis courts, and kids’ playground for other land-based activities.
Green Space and Trails (Accessible only by property owners and their guests) - Over 1,700 acres of Green space (open spaces) are maintained as habitat and protected from future development, including the 7.5 mile shoreline of Lake Galena. Wild turkey, white tailed deer, and red fox are frequently seen, along with hawks and eagles soaring overhead. Woods and meadows are lush with grasses, flowers, ferns, shrubs and trees May through October. With close to 23 miles of trails winding through Green space, hikers can spend a day enjoying the serenity and solitude that only nature can provide. Some of these trails also have lookout platforms for beautiful panoramas of Lake Galena and the countryside. The majority of the trails are natural and not paved. They are rugged and sometimes wet and slippery. However, that just adds to their charm! Hiking and horseback riding are two of the most popular pastimes here and can be enjoyed year-round. Although the trails are not groomed for cross-country skiing, you can enjoy them if you don’t mind breaking your own trail.
Shenandoah Riding Center (Open to the general public) - Offering horseback rides and lessons for everyone from novices to experienced riders, the Shenandoah Riding Center is also a full-service boarding facility. The riding center hosts a professional rodeo every Fourth of July, complete with bucking broncos, bull riding, cowboys, cowgirls and clowns. Riding a horse through the woods and meadows of The Galena Territory is a great way to experience nature and escape the hustle and bustle of our technological society. The facility is leased to Leahy Sport Horses, Inc. and is open to the general public. For more information, visit www.shenandoahridingcenter.com.
